The visit
Air duct cleaning here means taking the dust and debris out of both sides of the system: the supply lines that carry cooled air into each room and the return lines that draw it back to the air handler.
The trade calls the method "source removal". The trunk line is hooked to a vacuum that holds the whole system under negative air pressure, the registers are sealed off, and an air whip runs down each line to knock the buildup loose, so it travels out to the vacuum instead of into your rooms.

You see it at the registers first: a gray shadow on the ceiling around a supply vent, or a return grille that fuzzes over again a week after you wipe it. That film is the edge of what has settled farther down the line.
A filter change catches what is still moving through the air. It does nothing for the layer already stuck inside the ducts, which is why a house that looks new from the street still needs its lines opened up and cleaned.
